At Kensington International Clinic, our mental health department brings together psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists and neuropsychologists around a multidisciplinary approach designed for an international patient community. Located in the heart of London, our private clinic welcomes patients referred by a GP as well as those who choose to consult on their own initiative, whether for a one-off assessment, a single consultation or long-term follow-up.
Kensington International Clinic: a multidisciplinary approach to mental health
Our mental health department is built on a simple principle: the quality of psychological care depends first and foremost on getting the initial direction right. This is why the Kensington International Clinic places a team of complementary specialists at the service of its patients, practitioners who can consult one another and redirect a patient to the right professional when needed.
Psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, neuropsychologists: all the expertise you may require is gathered in one place, available for consultations and for in-depth assessments.
Cyprum itidem insulam procul a continenti discretam et portuosam inter municipia crebra urbes duae faciunt claram Salamis et Paphus, altera Iovis delubris altera Veneris templo insignis. tanta autem tamque multiplici fertilitate abundat rerum omnium eadem Cyprus ut nullius externi indigens adminiculi indigenis viribus a fundamento ipso carinae ad supremos usque carbasos aedificet onerariam navem omnibusque armamentis instructam mari committat.
Psychologist, psychiatrist, psychotherapist, neuropsychologist: what are the differences ?
This is probably the question you are asking before even booking: which professional should you see for a mental health consultation or assessment? Here is what genuinely sets these four profiles apart :
The psychiatrist is a medical doctor specialising in mental health. After medical school, they trained specifically in psychiatric disorders. They are qualified to make a medical diagnosis, prescribe medication (antidepressants, anxiolytics, mood stabilisers, ADHD treatments), issue medical certificates and coordinate care with other doctors.
The clinical psychologist holds a postgraduate university degree in psychology. They are not a medical doctor and do not prescribe, but they are trained in psychological assessment, cognitive testing, psychometrics and talking-based support. They are your point of contact for an in-depth psychological assessment, an evaluation of emotional functioning, or non-medicalised psychotherapeutic work.
The psychotherapist is a professional trained in one or more therapeutic approaches (psychoanalysis, cognitive behavioural therapy, systemic therapy, EMDR, and others). They provide long-term support on relational, existential, trauma-related or identity-related difficulties, without prescribing medication.
The neuropsychologist is a psychologist specialising in the relationship between the brain and behaviour. They carry out in-depth cognitive assessments (memory, attention, executive functions, language) to investigate suspected neurocognitive disorders, ADHD, consequences of head trauma or age-related cognitive decline.

Questions & Answers
When should you consult a mental health professional?
- A discomfort that persists over time: free-floating anxiety, low mood, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, unusual irritability, sleep disturbances that resist lifestyle adjustments. When these signs persist for several weeks, a consultation at least allows you to take stock.
- A life event that exceeds your usual resources: bereavement, separation, a difficult professional transition, expatriation, burnout, a recent medical diagnosis. Consultation is not reserved for established conditions: it is a tool to support transitions.
- An unexplained cognitive or attention difficulty: recurring lapses of memory, a sense of slowing down, difficulty concentrating at work, suspected ADHD in yourself or in a child. A neuropsychological assessment or an ADHD evaluation makes it possible to establish a clear framework.
- An already diagnosed psychiatric condition: bipolar disorder, recurrent depression, adult ADHD, generalised anxiety disorder. Regular psychiatric follow-up, combined or not with psychotherapy, is an integral part of treatment.
- A simple doubt: an initial consultation does not commit you to ongoing care. It may be limited to a one-off exchange, a referral to another professional, or simple confirmation that no specialist care is needed.
Do I need a GP referral to book?
No.
You can book directly with a psychiatrist, psychologist, psychotherapist or neuropsychologist at Kensington Clinic, without going through a GP. For patients who wish, we can send a consultation report to your GP after the appointment, only with your explicit consent.
What is the difference between a one-off consultation and a mental health assessment?
- A one-off consultation is part of a care pathway, to address a specific difficulty, adjust a treatment or benefit from therapeutic support ;
- An assessment is a structured evaluation aimed at establishing a diagnosis or mapping out psychological, emotional or cognitive functioning. It draws on standardised tools and results in a written report.
The choice between the two depends on your initial request, which your practitioner will clarify with you at the time of booking.
Can I book an appointment for a child or an adolescent ?
Yes !
Our mental health department sees children, adolescents and adults. Child and adolescent psychiatry consultations are provided by our two psychiatrists, Dr Denise Vohwinkel and Dr Pardis Mostajabi, both trained in the care of minors and adults. Neuropsychological assessments and ADHD evaluations are also available for children and adolescents, via our dedicated ADHD and Neuropsychology pages.
A parent or legal guardian must be present for any consultation of a minor, and the practitioner adapts the setting, language and length of the session to the patient’s age.
