Adult and child consultation
At Kensington International Clinic, mental health is approached as a medical discipline, through rigorous consultations led by two experienced private psychiatrists whose profiles complement each other: Dr Denise Vohwinkel and Dr Pardis Mostajabi.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, holding a full medical degree followed by a specialisation in psychiatry. They are the only mental health professional qualified to establish a psychiatric diagnosis, prescribe medication and coordinate complex care where it is needed. Consulting a private psychiatrist in London means accessing precise diagnostic expertise and genuinely individualised follow-up, without waiting times.
When should you see a private psychiatrist?
Many patients consult a psychiatrist to obtain a second opinion, clarify a diagnosis, reassess a treatment plan, or access care that goes beyond what a psychotherapist or GP can offer. A consultation is typically indicated in the following situations:
- Chronic anxiety, recurrent panic attacks or generalised anxiety disorder
- Persistent low mood, major depressive episode, postnatal depression
- Mood disorders, bipolar disorder, disabling mood swings
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and intrusive thoughts
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following a significant event
- Eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder
- Personality disorders and persistent relational difficulties
- Psychotic disorders, episodes of derealisation or depersonalisation
- Sleep disorders with an impact on daily functioning
- Adjustment difficulties linked to bereavement, divorce, or relocation
- Suicidal thoughts, self-harm behaviours
- Addictions: alcohol, substances and associated behavioural disorders
- Suspected ADHD in adults or children, requiring a formal medical diagnosis
- Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, diagnostic assessment

Her career combines over 10 years of clinical experience within the NHS with a teaching role and management responsibilities, along with a recognised endorsement in Rehabilitation Psychiatry, a sub-specialty that addresses severe and enduring mental health conditions.

FAQ
What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor specialised in psychiatry, qualified to establish a psychiatric diagnosis and to prescribe medication (antidepressants, anxiolytics, mood stabilisers). A psychologist holds a university degree in psychology. They carry out assessments and provide therapeutic support, but do not prescribe medication.
Do I need a GP referral to see a private psychiatrist?
No.
No prescription or referral letter is required to consult a private psychiatrist in London; you can book directly at Kensington International Clinic. However, if you have previous medical documents available, bringing them to the first consultation will help with the diagnosis!
