Dr Rami Wakim, consultant in obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive medicine

Dr Rami Wakim is a consultant in obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive medicine, accredited FRCOG (Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists), FACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) and FICS (International College of Surgeons).

Following his initial training in obstetrics and gynaecology, he developed his expertise in fertility through clinical fellowships at University College London Hospital (UCLH) and Imperial College London, where he contributed to research on the role of AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) in assessing ovarian reserve, a marker that has since become central to modern fertility assessment.

Across 25 years of practice, Dr Wakim has collaborated with several of London’s most respected fertility centres: IVF Hammersmith, the Assisted Reproduction and Gynaecology Centre (ARGC), the Harley Street Fertility Clinic and Create Fertility, among others. He is a member of the British Fertility Society (BFS), the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ISUOG).

Dr Wakim speaks fluent French, English and Arabic, making him one of the few fully bilingual fertility specialists in London, particularly accessible to the capital’s French-speaking and international communities.

What happens during a fertility consultation ?

Dr Wakim, fertility specialist in London at our private clinic, takes the time to review your medical and gynaecological history, any previous investigations, your history of attempts to conceive and your lifestyle. A clinical examination and pelvic ultrasound may be performed during the consultation, depending on your needs.

At the end of the visit, he proposes a clear way forward, which may include a complete fertility assessment with a detailed hormonal work-up, further investigations, or the setup of a tailored treatment pathway.

When should you see a fertility specialist?

Consulting a fertility specialist is always a good idea, whichever path you are on; it is never too early to get a clear diagnosis. Several situations warrant a specialist evaluation:

  • Failure to conceive after 12 months of regular intercourse without contraception in women under 35, or after 6 months for women over 35 ;
  • Age over 35 with a pregnancy plan: ovarian reserve and oocyte quality decline progressively, making an early assessment particularly valuable ;
  • Irregular or absent periods (amenorrhoea), which may signal an ovulation disorder, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or a hormonal imbalance ;
  • A history of recurrent miscarriage (two or more), which warrants a thorough aetiological investigation ;
  • Diagnosed or suspected endometriosis or uterine fibroids ;
  • A history of sexually transmitted infections, which may have caused tubal damage ;
  • A chronic condition (diabetes, thyroid disorders, hypertension) with a potential impact on fertility ;
  • Difficulties on the male partner’s side: erectile dysfunction, relevant medical history, or an abnormal semen analysis. Since fertility factors are shared in close to 50% of cases, male assessment is an integral part of the process ;
  • Fertility preservation: planning for egg freezing, or preparing before a potentially gonadotoxic medical treatment (chemotherapy in particular).

In all these situations, getting a proper assessment allows for a clear diagnosis before any therapeutic pathway is considered.
